Today we went on our last field trip to Republic's recycling plant. I thought this plant was very interesting. The tour that Mike gave us was awesome. We were able to go right up next to the assembly line and see the work at hand. I learned a lot of interesting stuff about the plant as well. With the economy being as down as it is, Republic was given 3 million dollars to build their recycling plant and to "do the best they could with what they had". With the amount of money that they were given the plant has exceeded all expectations. With the plants success, Republic has gone back to the drawing board to hopefully put more money into the plant in the near future.
We were also told that Republic just built a plant in California that is the largest in the world of its kind. They said that over 25 million dollars was put into this plant to make it one of the most technologically advanced plants ever. What I also thought was interesting about the trip today, was in the meeting room they had the pictures of the bails around the room. Each picture gave information about what each recycled bail saves energy wise. I thought this was pretty neat to think about. Do you think it would be a good idea to put these types of pictures up around campus to maybe spark recycling? I believe it would. If people were able to realize how much energy can actually be saved by recycling, it would make more sense to more people.
Wow! I agree Will, the recycling plant was really neat! I thought it was really cool to see where our recycling goes and how the plant sorts the recycled materials. I also thought it was interesting to think how much money went into the facilities and equipment. Mike said that the trucks cost $250,000 each and they had a lot of them. I can't believe this was our last field trip and I wish we had more!
ReplyDeleteWill, I thought this was one of our more interesting tours as well. Mike did a great job of prepping us for what we were going to see on the tour, as well as recapping important details of the assembly line process that we may have overlooked afterwards. I also agree that the plant seemed to work extremely efficiently considering the funds they had been given. It seemed that Mike ran a tight ship with his employees, and made sure that his equipment remained well maintained in order assure maximum production value. It still amazes me each time that I hear these large economic figures on our trips. Before this class I wouldn't have had the slightest notion that these recycling facilities cost multi-millions of dollars to maintain and operate. I now feel that I have a better understanding of why there is an additional cost to recycling, and can see the clear benefits of doing so as well. I also think we should put pictures of the recycling process in places like the hub to increase awareness of the potential benefits of recycling.
ReplyDeleteI agree. What I also find to be interesting and great for their customers is the fact that we do not have to sort our recyclables. They don't only provide a great recycling service, Republic provides more jobs to the community taking the extra time and labor to sort our trash. This process makes everything about recycling easier which is important for those recycling.
