What companies make the most profit from recycling

After our two field trips that took us to see different recycling facilities, I was curious as to what companies made the most money from operating a recycling facility.  After doing a google search, I found the top 8 companies that make money from recycling, and it was a pretty good read.

Here is a link to the article: http://earth911.com/news/2012/02/06/8-companies-that-make-money-from-recycling/

eBay and Ford seemed pretty obvious that they would be high up on recycling, but what surprised me was UPS,simply becuase they don't receive too much media coverage.

I then got curious about how much has recycling actually affected the amount of trash going into landfills.  After another frew minutes of searching I found that recycling caused an overall decrease of trash going into landfills by 35% from 1980 - 2009.  So it is nice to read about how the facilities are actually making a noticeable different in our choices.

Here is the link to that article as well:

  2. Taylor, I find your first link really interesting. Some of the companies that are on that list I have never heard of and the ones that I have heard of like Ebay I had no idea that they even offer a recycling option. I find it strange as avid Ebay user that I didn't even known about this, and I feel like maybe a lot of the public doesn't know either. With this program and Ebay's traditional use of selling it offers the second branch of the 3 Rs (Reuse) to many customers which is very beneficial to helping protect the environment and the third R (Recycle) having two of the three Rs is really impressive for a single company. The fact that other big companies like Ford are also taking the initiative to help out the Green Movement is awesome. Ford with the elimination of bottles, I would have never guessed that they would have this program but it is a happy surprise! I feel like the next step is getting more publicity and getting the general public involved because I am pretty sure there are a lot of people like me that haven't heard of these programs. Your post sparked an interest in me to google "most surprising recycling efforts" the Scientific American shared this little slide show preview that was nice and a creative spin on reusing products! http://www.scientificamerican.com/slideshow.cfm?id=earth-day-10-surprising-recyling-efforts

  3. your point and your links are very interesting to know and i really think how these companies use recycled materials and make profits from recycling needs to be spread and promoted so that more and more companies can work on recycling and create more profits. this does not only help reduce waste but also bring economic benefits.

  4. these were both two very interesting articles!! I was especially interested in viewing the different companies that profit the most from recycling, and was also surprised when I saw UPS, mostly because the other companies were basically ones centered around creation of consumer goods, and therefor would go hand in hand with the recycling process. I learned a lot from your articles, thanks for sharing!
